Teaching and Coaching

The Veinotte Horse Farm lesson horses have a variety of abilities to accommodate each students' learning goals. Whether you want to drive for pleasure or compete internationally; whether you fancy piloting a single horse, a pair, or a four-up, Kay and her horses can show you the way.
Many of the lesson horses have been used in the movies and parades. All of them are trained for a safe learning experience students can advance in. Kay teaches her students to be safety conscious and self-reliant in the ring and on the road.

Kay's Teaching Philosophy

"My goal is for my students to accomplish safely the skills needed to ride or drive so they can continue on their own". -Kay Veinotte

• Safety First! While this sounds obvious, much of Kay's instruction is about how to keep yourself and your horse safe while enjoying driving. She teaches the proper steps to safely harness, hitch, drive in company, drive alone, etc. Driving is not fun if it is not safe, and the same goes for riding.

• Kay knows that each student thinks and learns differently and she adjusts her lessons for each student's learning style.

• And now it is time for fun! Kay LOVES having fun, and students are invited to join in. There are lots of opportunities for group events, shows and 'horsing around' in lessons. Play is part of learning in Kay's book!

Meet the Lesson Horses

Miniman

"The best horse on the property".
Miniman has seen and done it all and is the perfect horse for beginning drivers.

Marlowe

Marlowe is a 15hh Morgan gelding with lots of movie & life experience. His forte is doing exactly what his driver tells him, giving instant feedback.

Itske fan Pacific Rim

Nothing beats the thrill of driving a Friesian! Itske is a kind mare with a straightforward outlook on life.

Ellie

Ellie is a 15.3hh PercheronX. She came to driving late in her life and is an excellent example of a riding horse's second career. She enjoys giving the correct answer when it is correctly asked!

The Mini Horses

Big learning comes in small packages. Miniman and his friends can make singles, pairs, and 4-up hitches to improve your game. Want more? Try a 6-up hitch, a Tandem or a Random (that's 3 singles in a row!)

Savannah

Savannah is newer at driving and is an excellent horse for more advanced students to teach a horse.

Driving lessons for Riders

Can riders benefit from learning to drive a horse? Absolutely!

For riders who have tried carriage driving, at first the differences are surprising, but after even a short time cross-training in a horse-drawn vehicle, the benefits are huge.

Controlling a horse from above and behind it gives a unique view of how the rein aides affect the horse's spine and way of going. For example, inconsistency in the hands and body posture become more apparent and can be improved in isolation, making your riding discipline more effective.

Driving gives you the added advantage of having Kay beside or behind you 'every step of the way' from the same vantage point.

Not the least important is that driving is just plain fun and another way to enjoy horses. Why not get a sneak peak into a sport you and your horse can retire from riding into later on?
