What is a Caspian Horse?

The Caspian, with history tracing back to 3,000 BC and re-discovery in 1965, may be both the oldest and newest breed of horse!

Although pony-sized, the Caspian is not related to pony breeds. Its proportions are those of a well-bred, elegant horse. Despite having an average height of 11-12 hands (44-48”), Caspians have been known to match strides with a regular sized riding horse at every gait except the gallop.

Caspians are renowned for their courage, intelligence, trainability, incredible jumping ability and athleticism. They excel at driving, and are perfect childrens’ mounts for pony club and jumping. Their agility makes them a natural for speed events such as poles, barrels, and scurry driving.

A brief history of the Caspian Horse

"The discovery of the Caspian, a breed of great antiquity, was a matter of the greatest scientific and historical important in equine studies."
Elwyn Hartley Edwards The Encyclopedia of the Horse

In present-day Iran, there stand the ancient ruins of a once-great city, Persepolis—the center of the Persian Empire. On the walls of the great city are carvings that depict small, elegant horses. In the early 1960s, these carvings inspired an American woman, Louise Firouz, to search for this long-lost horse.

Louise was an accomplished horsewoman who had married an Iranian and was living in Tehran. She was looking for athletic, trainable small mounts for her riding school. On a trip to a remote mountain village near the Caspian Sea, Louise found what she was looking for—a small, elegant stallion pulling an overloaded cart with grace and style. Louise acquired this stallion and additional horses from the area, using very strict criteria in her selection process. From this handful of horses, the Caspian stepped out of history and into the modern world (read more at https://www.caspian.org/).
